Happenings:
In November 2006 Albuquerque mayor Marty Chavez approved the purchase of the 67-acre "Hawkwatch" parcel in Tijeras Canyon as Albuquerque Open Space. The property has proven to be a critical corridor for wildlife to cross I-40. The property has also been identified by the NM Department of Transportation as the ideal location for a potential wildlife bridge over I-40. Had the property not been purchased as Albuquerque Open Space, it is likely another buyer would not have allowed an overpass to be constructed.
The appropriation of $650,000 for the property was first proposed by Albuquerque City Council President Martin Heinrich.
The Tijeras Canyon Safe Passage Coalition wishes to thank Council President Martin Heinrich, Mayor Marty Chavez, Hawkwatch International (the current owner of the property), and especially Scott Wilbur of the New Mexico Land Conservancy for making this purchase possible!
